No, it’s not a money tree. It’s a “free online business.” Here’s how it really works:
- Company applies for tons of affiliate programs on Commission Junction, LinkShare, etc.
- Company posts tons of affiliate banners on a web site.
- Replicates web site.
- Calls the site “a mall.”
- People who sign up get a replicated site.
- Members sign up other members under them.
- Members buy stuff by clicking on affiliate links on their own replicated sites.
- Company gets affiliate commission from businesses (either directly or through the affiliate site).
- Company gives members a tiny percentage of affiliate commission.
The problem: Without selling the business opportunity to others, you have no downline to make money off of. Without someone buying products from their “malls,” there is no commission. Members get paid only if both selling and purchasing are involved.

This is so true.
I think that these ‘malls’ that advertise themselves as a primary source of income are taking advantage of the general publics lack of knowledge concerning business and economics. Heck, I was even drawn into it before you came along and showed why it wouldn’t work.
They make it sound so easy. “If everyone spends $100, in their mall, we’ll all be millionaires!” Well, where is everyone getting their $100 from? Oh yeah. From people below them spending $100, who in turn get their money from the people below them spending $100…and so on. Eventually, the guy on the bottom is spending $100 and not getting anything in return.
Don’t get me wrong. I think rebate malls can be a nice way to order much needed business supplies…for your other product-based businesses. Eventually, you’ll get some money back, and sometimes they’ve got special deals going. The proponents of these programs just need to be honest about the (un)likely-hood of making a profit.
